Watercolors

The California Quail is a most amusing bird in appearance. The plume above it’s head consisting of six feathers makes it look like it has built in WiFi. Despite the diminutive size when there is a flock of them they can make a loud racket. When spooked the normally ground based quail can fly up in a flurry. They have striking coloration.

Most people regard the spring vetch as a weed. To me it is a delicate flower in subtle colors.

The ornate tiger moth does it’s name full justice.

Coming upon a tree filled with resting crows is always a sight to behold. They seem to be rather fond of congregating. One time near the east end of the park there must have been at least 500 crows in the air and the racket they made was unreal. Something must have spooked them. I have never seen so many in one place.

Iris are an elegant showy perennial that grow in moist habitats such as next to creeks. My favorite iris I have seen were small batches planted in containers sitting in a pond, with koi lazily swimming by or around them.

Japanese maple trees have always had a special place in my heart, in a palette of colors ranging from green, red, to yellow and orange, they are some of the most spectacular fall foliage trees, or a gentle breath of new life when the first leaves of spring open. I gave a rare “salt & pepper” maple tree to my son Patrick some years back - a name befitting for a chef I thought, and it is a delight to watch it’s growth.
